About Graphic Design & Illustration

Aldous Huxley’s 1931 novel Brave New World describes a world where constant entertainment is used as a tool to create a passive society, removed from reality and highly controllable. It shares many uncomfortable parallels with our own present, where the stream of images never stops, and the agenda behind them is harder and harder to detect.

The students graduating from the Bachelor’s programme in Graphic Design & Illustration will be responsible for our future visual world: the books we read, the signs we see, the posters, films and typefaces. While their aim might be to entertain, it is also to question, to provoke, and to effect change. They will use their visual skills to create a visual culture that is enlightening and responsible.

In this vein, this year’s projects look close to home — from development, gentrification and housing in Stockholm, Swedish values, to the perception of rural Sweden. They speculate not only on the poetic themes of memory, faith, heterotopia, space and time, but also the real issues of finance, consumption and ecology.

We can view the world emotionally, socially, politically. Our students are working at a time when the definitions and platforms of visual communication are changing. They work with the physical world around them but also the intangible world. Graphic design and illustration exist to give voice to the things impossible to say through normal language, or where languages fail, or where there is no language. Our students speak for those who have no voice, and they invent new voices. This is the true job of visual communication, to articulate for the now, to give voice to the past, but also to speculate and invent for the ideal future, from the local to the universal.
