My investigation explores the domestic environment and the everyday, with a focus on raising awareness of the present in trivial domestic activities and enhancing the experience of these daily rituals.
Spatial Framework
Sarah Wigglesworth’s Straw Bale House and Go Hasegawa’s House in Sakuradai represent two methods of arranging space – combining and breaking down. My project takes a third approach by providing a spatial framework, within which functional layouts can be rearranged.
Scale of Time
William Empson writes that the length of a human life and the conscious moment are the two main scales by which the human mind measures time. With one too large to sense and the other too difficult to identify, my degree project instead uses the length of individual daily activities as units to help make time perceptible.
Specific and Generic Space
Based on informal surveys and my own everyday routine at home, I have classified activities as either Specific or Generic. Each Specific activity has been given a customised movable event box containing Specific space. The negative space created between these event boxes within the project’s spatial framework is the Generic space used for Generic activities.

Den ena är för stor för att få grepp om och den andra är för svår att identifiera. Mitt examensarbete använder istället längden av olika dagliga sysslor för att göra tid greppbart.
Specific and Generic Space
Utifrån informella undersökningar och min egen dagliga rutin i hemmet har jag gjort en uppdelning av aktiviteter som antingen Specifika [Specific] eller Allmänna [Generic]. Varje Specifik aktivitet har tilldelats en egen, rörlig händelselåda som innehåller ett Specifikt rum. Det negativa rummet som skapas mellan dessa lådor inom projektets ramverk är det Allmänna rummet som används för Allmänna aktiviteter.
