The Layout of History – Analysing the Hidden History of Women Through Design

The Layout of History – Analysing the Hidden History of Women Through Design is a research project that contains writings, experiments and research data about the lack of women in history, exploring how this lack appears to us visually in the form of a design approach often referred to as feminine design. The project serves as a critique on how such a design approach is generally considered to be of less value than a so-called universal design approach. The research is based on 100 samples of history books from Iceland, thereof 50 Icelandic national history books and 50 women’s history books. Through these samples, I explore the ever-continuing lack of women in history books and identify, in the finest detail, what different design choices are made when designing for women versus when designing for something that is generally considered to be neutral.

The Layout of History – Analysing the Hidden History of Women Through Design
