River, who are you?
A river is a meeting place.
A river is the Ocean.
I finish my wreath, and let it flow.
Rivers have many powers: they carry sediments and sentiments, revive lands and minds, connect places and times. They are sources of life and of conflict; paths of stories travelling the Earth. Their flow constantly reminds us – we all live downstream, or upstream, from someone, we are all neighbours.
My degree project is a picture book for children about rivers. It follows a child and her grandma as they look for answers to a question – what is a river? In their imaginative expedition, they discover rivers flowing in the sky and in living organisms; meet pilgrims and conquistadores, magical shape-shifting river dolphins and older-than-dinosaurs species of sturgeons; and explore many other things.
To make my book, I used a variety of materials, including pencils, watercolours, gouache, digital drawing; and a collection of geographical, historical and mythological references I have gathered as well as my own memories of growing up close to a river. I have tried to balance both factually accurate and poetic storytelling to create a story of interconnectedness and wonder.
Floder har många krafter: de kan föra med sig materia och tankar, ge liv till mark och sinnen, koppla samman tid och rum. De ger upphov till liv och konflikter, vägar längs vilka historier rör sig över jorden. Deras flöde påminner oss ständigt om att vi alla lever nedströms eller uppströms från någon annan. Vi är alla grannar.
I mitt examensarbete delar jag med mig av mitt intresse för floder, främst med barn, som också är målgruppen för arbetet. Från geografiska fakta, historier, mytologi, folktro och mina egna observationer om floder har jag skapat en bilderbok om ett barn och hennes mormor på jakt efter svar på frågan ”vad är en flod?” I mitt narrativ har jag försöka balansera vetenskap och poesi för att utforska hur floder finns i våra liv på olika sätt i hopp om att skapa en berättelse om samband och förundran.
