Rhizome

This work is part of an investigation that focuses on learning, change and transformation. I have been working as a preschool teacher for a long time and am fascinated by the potential for knowledge production found within preschool children. With the help of educational documentation, I have studied how preschool children learn and develop in the reality in which they exist. I no longer work in preschools and now teach adults, but my interest in knowledge production remains. I have based my degree projects on my own knowledge production over the course of almost 50 years.
To delve deeply into how learning could potentially be visualised, I have, in my investigation, presented various spatial and sensual impressions that have been particularly important throughout my life. These memories are presented in my composition as short stories, or memory fragments. Their meaning constitutes part of the knowledge rhizome that characterises the way I relate to the world around me. The method I have used is artist/researcher/teacher, where a patchwork quilt of different disciplines and methods complements and assists with drawing boundaries in the investigation. Memory fragments, theories, methods and the creation of the sculpture are woven together in order to explain the complexity and infinite branches of knowledge creation. The sculpture is the rhizome of knowledge that is carried in my daughter’s arms. The bond between us also influences how I relate to the world around me, and this was altered when we created the sculpture together. The skull symbolises myself and the fact that I have also had to sacrifice things in my life in order to move forward.
The philosophers Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guttari compare the term rhizome to a plant system that is impossible to eradicate. The system is constantly transforming and expanding completely unsystematically, with no beginning and no end.
With the help of Deleuze and Guttari’s post-humanist philosophical ideas, I want to investigate why learning and development are so complex and why we need to use various means by which to present knowledge for all pupils of all ages in all forms of school.
In the knowledge rhizome everything has a role to play and everything is given meaning.

Rhizom
