In Transition, Investigation of Architectural Elements

Every day, almost 8000 people pass through the ticket barrier at Mariatorget subway station during the rush hours. I am often one of them; however, when I set out, the site only played the part of a transitional area where I would board a train to go somewhere else. The familiarity of the site and its programme led to a blindness, an inability to see the site in a new light or to use it in new ways.

The focus of my degree project is an investigation into how architectural elements can be remixed and reassembled, and how the resulting structures can create new scenarios. In my process, I have been working with different ways on how to relate to a site. I have experimented with several approaches to renew my impression of the site while at the same time keeping the integrity of the site’s expression intact.

By deconstructing an existing pillar at the station, I have explored how assembled and dispersed fragments can become a new feature at the station and how these parts interact with the site and its surroundings, to form a new entity and to create a different impression of a familiar site.

In Transition, Investigation of Architectural elements
