About Fine Art

Contemporary art education is a rigorous improvisation — a relational engagement with your peers and endless references. We, who temporarily occupy the Fine Art department, collectively shape the investments and trajectories of what it is to be an artist today, and what it is to be teaching and learning with and from art. The cohort of students are, for two intense years, each other’s best audience, reflecting each other and co-creating their field. The class of 2017 has been distinctly attentive to this ethos of shared knowledge production and inter-related becoming. As a group, they are articulate with each other’s works and processes in sophisticated and dynamic ways. That they became a group of artists instead of incidental individuals informs the quality and direction of the works. I think of John Cage, famous for composing works through ‘chance operations’, and for his decades long collaborative partnership with Merce Cunningham; Cage has said “the success of chance determinacy depends on the quality of the questions being asked”. This class, thrown together by chance, has heightened the quality of the questions they are each asking. Their influence on each other is a commitment to art, a commitment to take seriously, and serious pleasure in, the discourse and challenges of being an artist today.

As they have questioned each other and shared these two years, we now see the results of this process. In some places, we will see the work appearing as a challenge or provocation, making struggle visible. In other places, we will see the investment in process and material. Throughout, there is a focus on how artists give form to questions and to visible and continuous processes — stories that keep changing, characters morphing from one into the next, liveness, and interaction; virtual and applied architectures, ecologies, archives, islands imagined, weather patterns formalized; following a song, painting a formula, the weight of being under. Each practice distinct in form but sharing a rigorous engagement with working now, and becoming together.
